Bathrooms

Green is a refreshing color for a bathroom and even more revitalizing as a concept. Think about how resource-heavy our bathrooms are – this is where we drain the most water, fire up hairdryers, bulbs of bright lights, electric toothbrushes, shavers and any other cool grooming gadgets we can get our hands on. Greening the bathroom may require some of the improvements below:

  • Materials factor in heavily for the green bathroom. If you’re planning a bathroom remodel, think about making eco-conscious substitutions, such as bamboo for harvested cabinetry wood; recycled glass tiles for walls, countertops and floors; and Energy Star lighting overhead.
  • Low-flow toilets are not just desirable and efficient – they’re mandated by the EPA. These water-saving toilets cut 3 to 5 gallons of water per flush down to just 1.6 gallons.
  • Low-flow faucets also save about 30 percent more water, slimming down your water bill and carbon footprint at the same time. To maintain effectiveness, assure that there are no leaks or drips, no matter what the flow.
  • Since the bathroom is where most of the hot water is used, tankless hot water heaters take up less space and save an average of 25 to 50 percent on your utility bill, not to mention the conservation benefits. The federal government offers tax rebates for switching over.
  • Remember the environment on cleaning day as well. Think about the use and disposal of cleaning and hygiene products. And don’t forget bathroom recycling, right down to the cardboard rolls inside your toilet paper.
