LEED AP Building Design + Construction (BD+C)

This summer the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is instituting their new credentialing system for green building professionals. Under the new system, green building specialists will be able to take exams and qualify for much more specialized USGBC designations.

One of the changes being implemented, which began on June 12, is to change over the New Construction and Commercial Interior credential/exam into separate exams and credentials for the two categories. This will help homeowners distinguish between the knowledge and experience of professionals with these USGBC designations. Under the v.3 LEED program, builders and other professionals in the building industry will have to either choose between the Building Design + Construction credential or the Commercial Interiors credential to indicate the area of their expertise.

Many homeowners may be confused as to how to go about deciding what type of LEED AP (accredited professional) to hire when attempting to build a LEED certified home. Now that LEED specialists are divided into more specialized credentials, it may seem like you’ll need one for the design of your home, one for the construction, and a separate AP for the home’s interior. In reality having all three of these people on your dream home team could give you a wealth of experience and knowledge, but it could just as easily complicate things and confuse the process. Typically for the design and construction of a new structure, a LEED AP Building Design + Construction credentialed builder will suffice to see your project through from beginning to LEED Certification.

While architects, designers, and builders may be a bit confused for a while as to what they need to do to keep their USGBC credentials current during this transition phase, they most likely won’t be confused as to the certification process for your home. Project certification hasn’t changed much and each professional, regardless of LEED specialty designation in the new tiered system, is well-versed in the process by which projects earn an ample amount of points to earn certification.
