House Painting

House painting (whether it’s a shade of green or not) could use some green consideration. Paint is almost always a part of any undertaking – big renovations, room makeovers, DIY redos or even a small craft project. It’s important to know what you’re getting your brush into before you begin. Traditional paints contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds), which are airborne chemicals that pollute both inside and outside your home. Though strongest during the application process, they continue to off-gas for years, even if the paint is removed. For this reason, green paint companies specialize in all-natural nontoxic paints and finishes. Green Seal has a certification process to steer buyers toward low-VOC purchases.

For absolutely no chemicals or VOCs, choose all-natural paints. The most popular are clay paint and milk paint for indoor use only. Another great option is lime wash, which is safe for indoors and outdoors. And for cleanup, turpentine is the eco-friendliest.
