Kitchens

As the hub of the household, the kitchen can be the most energy-sapping room of them all.  It makes sense that where we cook, eat and gather will also be where we use the most energy. But it doesn’t have to equate to inefficiency.

Here are some ways to cut down without cutting out:

  • Focus on utilizing existing space to the fullest.
  • Opt for eco-conscious materials instead of traditional building supplies for cabinets, counters and flooring. You could choose recycled glass countertops instead of granite, and cork flooring in place of hardwood.
  • For your walls and furniture, go with nontoxic paints, finishes and glues.
  • Select eco-friendly lighting and take advantage of energy efficient windows and skylights.
  • Spend a little time researching your options for new appliances. Energy Star products save money and reduce waste.
  • Don’t overlook the green opportunities when the kitchen is back in full swing. Recycle trash items, appliances and anything else you may be getting rid of.
  • Remember “green” when you clean. Reuse and wash; this cuts down on napkins and paper plates.
  • Buy locally to support your community and reduce transportation pollution.
