Adhesives and Sealants

Traditional solvent-based adhesives are notorious for toxic VOC emission. As the adhesive dries, a carrier evaporates, becomes airborne and continues to off-gas into the surrounding environment. Air quality regulations call for use of water-based adhesives instead, which have significantly lower VOC emissions. Evaporating water isn’t a major health issue, but other elements of the adhesive, sealant or caulking still typically release VOCs.

The following green adhesives and sealants reduce indoor air pollution and contain recycled content. Adhesives should have VOC levels of 50 grams per liter or less. Sealants are most dangerous during and immediately after installation, so wear protective gear if you’re doing the work yourself.
