For decades, there hadn't been a widespread program for recycling the nearly 1.7 million tons of old carpet dumped into landfills every year. That is, until the recently approved NSF/ANSI 140-2007e Sustainable Carpet Assessment. As a screening process for hopeful green carpet manufacturers, the voluntary standard takes a comprehensive look at the lifespan of green carpets, ranking the different types by silver, gold or platinum certification.
To achieve platinum status, these carpets must contain 10% post-consumer recycled content, reach certification by the Green Label Plus Program or California’s 01350 for indoor air quality, successfully meet CARE recycling goals, and must not contain PBDE flame retardants. The carpets below passed the test with flying colors.
