Studies show that for every ton of concrete produced, another ton of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Coal-fired concrete kilns require enormous amounts of energy and are responsible for high nitrous oxide and sulfur emissions. It’s extremely important to minimize concrete use whenever possible. Concrete pier foundations, for example, are better than full-height frost walls and can be used for construction of whole buildings. Or if you plan to cover concrete flooring with cosmetic layers and finishes, think about coloring pigments instead. They turn out beautifully polished and don’t require any extra materials (or the environmental impact that comes with making those materials).
The green concrete materials here take weight and pollution into consideration; they allow you to use less concrete for equal or more construction. The materials are also made with recycled content and/or are plywood-certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
