Brrrrrr! Some notes on furnace care & filters

Temperatures dropped dramatically all over the country within the last couple of weeks.  As we’ve been hitting our first cold spells, I learned a few tips about furnace filters to share.

For gas-powered furnaces, the efficiency and air quality in your home depend greatly on the filter--make sure it’s the right type and that it’s been replaced recently enough, and it will save on natural resources and save you money.  But, particularly for those with allergies, asthma or chemical sensitivity, air quality must be factored in as well.

There are two main types of filters:

Standard Filter, made from spun fibers.  These collect the larger particles, and have to be changed about once a month.

High-Performance Accordion Filter, made from accordion-folded paper.  These collect smaller particles, including allergens and smaller dust, making them better for air quality and recommended for homes with small children and seniors.  They only need to be changed once a season, and the recycled paper they’re made of makes them eco-friendly.  However, if the furnace isn’t made for them, they can reduce air flow dramatically, making the furnace much less efficient, and counter-acting the positive effects.

As you fire up the furnace, remember to check the filter, check that it’s the right type, and that it’s clean and doesn’t need changing.  It’ll save on energy, make your home healthier, and even help with energy costs.  Stay warm this winter!
