Thermal and Moisture Protection

Traditional thermal and moisture protection materials use dangerous, high-VOC content. For greener protection, stick to water-based, elastomeric building coatings and similar materials. Many of these waterproofing sealants react with concrete to form resistant seals without high toxic emissions. If you plan to use fluid-applied waterproofing methods, look for low-VOCs, recycled materials and long-lasting durability.

Keep in mind that your thermal insulation system should work in tune with the moisture protection. The two are very closely linked; any product that restricts heat flow will also affect air circulation and moisture flow. Think about these other hygrothermal dynamics when you're making your decision. Some top green insulation materials are: cellulose, fiberglass, rock wool and silica.

Like waterproofing sealants, the thermal insulation materials below also have low-VOC emissions and are made from post-consumer recycled content. Plus, they use non-ozone depleting blowing agents and less energy for formulation.
