Koch Cabinets
Yes, you read that right - wheat straw. Koch cabinets are made similarly to plywood, but with pressed wheat straw rather than wood particulate. Manufactured with low-VOC (volatile organic compound) content, Koch Cabinet's toxicity is less harmful than traditional glues, which can continually off-gas formaldehyde into your home's breathing air for five years or longer.
The big deal here is the wheat straw board that Koch uses. Wheat is rapidly renewable; the supply for Koch cabinets can be renewed in a single year. The company is also compliant with the California 2009 indoor emissions standard, which like many CA standards, is about as restrictive as they come in America.
Koch offers over 20 door designs to choose from and says that the wheat board works well with any of the wood lines, including Cherry, Red Oak, Knotty Alder, Maple, Rustic Maple, Rustic Beech, Hickory, Beech, and Rift Cut Oak. All cabinets come with a five-year warranty. Koch also notes that reclaimed and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) woods are available in most instances.
