Windows

To find the most energy efficient windows for your home, first take into consideration where you’re located. Warmer climates, for example, require less window efficiency than colder ones. Also, make sure to take advantage of your $1,500 tax credit. Since window heat loss accounts for a quarter or more of a home’s energy bill, the federal government is giving homeowners a tax savings from now until December 31, 2010 for efficient upgrades. Local utilities may also offer rebates and incentives.

Important window features to consider:

  • Check a window’s U-Factor to determine how well it blocks heat transference. The lower the U-Factor, the better the window.
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much heat enters the window with light. In this case as well, a lower number is better.
  • Low-e coatings can reduce heating & cooling loss by as much as 50%. There are two types, soft and hard coat, and they look and perform differently. Soft coats are more efficient, but somewhat less durable. Ask your window installer which coating is right for you.
  • Your windows should also offer some protection from UV rays. Check out other options, such as solar shading and energy efficient blinds, to get the most out of your upgrade.
